Skagen, Denmark
This northernmost town in Denmark, close to the confluence of the Kattegat and Skagerrak, became a holiday resort at the end of the 19th century. Many great painters have visited the town relishing the combination of sea on both sides of town and the unique light. In the old part of the town the characteristic yellow-washed houses with white-painted roof ridges dominate, while beside the fishing port the red warehouses contain many art galleries and museums.

Helsinki, Finland
Finland's capital since 1812, built on a peninsula amid a cluster of islands, stately Helsinki is 'the Daughter of the Baltic'. Still preserving something of the mood of a 19th century seaport, it's a city of intriguing contrasts; from handsome and imposing neo-classical buildings and many museums to lively shopping esplanades and the colourful Kauppatori produce and craft market.

Gdynia, Poland
The Baltic port for the old Hanseatic city of Gdansk - formerly known as Danzig, and today as the cradle of Poland's solidarity movement. Gdansk's story goes back over 1,000 years, and though the original Old Town was largely destroyed in the last war, restoration has created an authentic setting whose beautiful monuments (among them Poland's largest Gothic church), historic gateways, imposing towers and medieval streets bring alive the mood of a Hansa merchants' settlement. |
